2. Psalm 19.1-14 Read slide
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, and there are no words; their voice is not heard. Their measuring line goes out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out from his wedding chamber; it rejoices like a warrior to run its course. Its rising is from the ends of the heavens, and its circuit to their ends, and nothing is hidden from its heat. The law of Yahweh is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of Yahweh is trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of Yahweh are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of Yahweh is radiant, enlightening the eyes. The fear of Yahweh is pure, enduring forever; the judgments of Yahweh are true, they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, than much fine gold; and sweeter than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, your servant is warned by them; in keeping them there is a great reward. Who can discern errors? Absolve me from hidden faults. Also keep back your servant from insolent sins; do not let them rule over me. Then I will be blameless, and I will be innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before you, Yahweh, my rock and my redeemer.
The heavens tell about the glory of God. The skies show that his hands made them. Day after day they speak. Night after night they show what they know. They do not use words. They do not use any language. Their voice is not heard. Yet their voice goes out into the whole earth. Their words reach to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber. It is like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its way to the other. Nothing is hidden from its heat. The law of the Lord is perfect. It brings new life. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy. They make simple people wise. The orders of the Lord are right. They bring joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant. They give light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure. It lasts forever. The rules of the Lord are true. They are all right. They are more precious than gold. They are worth much more than pure gold. They are sweeter than honey. They are sweeter than honey dripping from the comb. By them your servant is warned. Keep them, and you will receive a great reward. Who can know all their errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep me from sins of pride. Do not let them rule over me. Then I will be pure. I will be free from heavy sin. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord. You are my Rock and my Redeemer.

3. Matthew 5:14-16 Read slide
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under the basket, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can't be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine so that others may see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will praise your Father who is in heaven.

4. 1 John 1:5-7 Read slide
And this is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
This is the message we heard from Jesus and are announcing to you. God is light. There is no darkness at all in him. Suppose we claim that we share in life with him. But suppose we keep on walking in the darkness. Then we are liars. We are not living out the truth. But suppose we walk in the light, just as he is in the light. Then we share in life with one another. And the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be for lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light for ruling the day and the lesser light for ruling the night—and the stars. And God placed them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. God said, "Let there be lights in the vaulted-sky. Let them separate the day from the night. Let them serve as signs to mark times and days and years. Let them be lights in the vaulted-sky to give light on the earth." And that is what happened. God made two great lights. He made the greater light to rule the day. He made the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. God set lights in the vaulted-sky to give light on the earth. He set them there to rule over the day and over the night. He set them to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. There was evening, and there was morning. It was the fourth day.

Anyone who walks in the dark doesn't know where they are going. Put your trust in the light while you have it. Then you will become children of light." Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here; I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her radiance was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. It had a great and high wall, having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. On the east three gates, and on the north three gates, and on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold, so that he might measure the city and its gates and its wall. And the city lies square, and its length is as great as the width. And he measured the city with the rod to fifteen hundred stadia; its length and width and height are equal. And he measured its wall, a hundred and forty-four cubits by human measure, which is the angel's. And the building material of its wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the city wall were decorated with every kind of precious stone: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was made from a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. And I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty is its temple, and the Lamb. And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon so that they may shine on it, for the glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb. And the nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. And its gates will never be shut by day, for there will be no night there. And they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. And never will anything unclean enter into it, and anyone who practices detestable things and falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
One of the seven angels had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues. He came over and said to me, "Come. I will show you the bride. She is the wife of the Lamb." He carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain that was huge and high. He showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem. It was coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God. It was like a very precious jewel. It was like a clear jasper stone. The city had a great, high wall. It had 12 gates. There were 12 angels at the gates. The names of the 12 tribes of Israel were written on the gates. There were three gates on the east. There were three on the north. There were three on the south. And there were three on the west. The wall of the city had 12 foundations. The names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb were written on them. The angel who talked with me had a measuring stick made of gold. He had it to measure the city, its gates and its wall. The city was laid out like a square. Its length was as long as its width. He measured the city with the stick. It was 1,500 miles long. Its length and width and height are equal. He also measured the wall. It was 216 feet thick, using human measurement, which the angel was using. The wall was made of jasper. The city was made of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city wall were decorated with every kind of jewel. The first foundation was jasper. The second was sapphire. The third was agate. The fourth was emerald. The fifth was onyx. The sixth was ruby. The seventh was chrysolite. The eighth was beryl. The ninth was topaz. The tenth was turquoise. The eleventh was jacinth. The twelfth was amethyst. The 12 gates were 12 pearls. Each gate was made out of a single pearl. The main street of the city was made of pure gold, as clear as glass. I did not see a temple in the city. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it. The glory of God gives it light. The Lamb is its lamp. Nations will walk by its light. The kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. Its gates will never be shut all day long. There will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it. No one who does what is shameful or lies will ever enter it. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life will enter it.
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here; I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.

Then Jesus cried out and said, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me. And the one who sees me sees the one who sent me. I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him, for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has one who judges him: the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. For I have not spoken from myself, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment, what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, what I speak, just as the Father has told me, so I speak."
Jesus cried out, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light. So no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. "As for anyone who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge them. For I did not come to judge the world. I came to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words. The very words I have spoken will judge them on the last day. I did not speak on my own. Instead, the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
Then Jesus cried out and said, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me. And the one who sees me sees the one who sent me. And leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled, saying: "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, a light has dawned upon them." From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
Jesus left Nazareth. He went and lived in Capernaum. It was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali. This happened to bring about what the prophet Isaiah had said: "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the lake, over the Jordan, Galilee of the nations— the people living in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." From that time on, Jesus began to preach. He said, "Turn away from your sins. Turn to God. The kingdom of heaven has come near."

Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children, and walk in love, just as also Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma. Therefore do not become partners with them. For you were at one time darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light—for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth—trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even expose them, for it is shameful even to speak of the things happening secretly by them. But all things being exposed by the light are made visible, for everything that makes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Awake, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
